I felt like my food was stuck above my stomach for a while and that is when the burning starts. After a while there would be some relief when my tummy would accept the food but then I think my tummy was so acidy from waiting that I was very nauseated. Ended up in hospital for a week where they did every test known to man and since my lipase was elevated slightly (115) they called in pancreatitis.

Have the doctors done any studies like a barium swallow, an esophageal motility test or a 24 hour ph monitoring? I had a Nissen in 1998 and have done real well. I was lucky though because my GI doctor and my surgeon were both excellent (talented MD's and compassionate to boot!). I was on meds for about 6 months and they didn't help like they should have. If your doctor's aren't listening to you, you have the right to find a doctor who will. Your concern's about the long term effects of GERD are valid and I have read studies that say that patients who have the surgery fare better in the long run than those on a medicine regimen. I have found that some "medical" doctor's(those who aren't surgeons) are almost biased against surgical options and will let a problem go far too long rather than call for a surgical opinion. What country are you from? Do you have the option to shop around for a good doctor? I wish you the best and I sympathize with your frustration. I was there not too long ago!

You have the right to not have her sent home. I do not have anywhere near the problems that your dear mother has but my story follows. Please INSIST that she be monitored until a type of wellness is realized. God bless and good luck. I so wish there was an easy solution to health issues.I have been "VERY ILL" for 10 weeks now with. I didn't know what was wrong. Just all of a sudden I had deep belches and rushes of Wind (yes wind) out of my mouth from my throat. Intensed burning in between my ribs going around to my back after I ate. However, the pancreas showed no signes of swelling, gall bladder was fine as well as every other test they ran....except.......the endoscopy showed a hiatal hernia, esophigitis and acid reflux. Well that was 3 weeks ago. I still have alot of discomfort. Nausea, no appetite (have gone from 131 lbs to 114 lbs in 10 weeks) tightness in tummy and just feel like poopoo because of the weight loss and not being able to eat much at all. I am on Protonix 2x a day and zofran for nausea after meals. In your experiences has anyone had it to this extent? If so what courses of treatment did you take. any help you can lend would be great. My personal email is I have a appt follow up with my gastroenterologist today. I am thinking of asking him to repair the hiatal hernia unless any of you have a miracle cure. Thank you so much for listening. Hope to hear from you.

I have a 2 cm hiatal hernia diagnosed about 10 yrs ago. reflux symptoms have been sucessfully controlled with Zantac. Anyone have any data on wind instruments such as trumpet or bagpipe playing and the relationship to hiatal hernia/ GERD?

My mother recently underwent a surgery for a type 4 hiatal hernia where is had her complete stomach and intestines and colon lodged behind her lungs in her chest cavity. Her lungs were collapsing from the pressure and she was told she could die from the stomach twisting and cutting off blood supply etc etc. Now her stomach won't process or accept any feedings from her feeding tube or by mouth. Could her vagus nerve be ruined or severred? What are her options now? I also thought that they should have done a gastric by-pass at the sametime as her stomach was so large and the surgeon had to put a peg in the center to hold it down as well as 3 other spots of mesh netting to hold her stomach in place. Is there any hope for her? Now they want to reput in a central line and give her nutrition through that and send her home. Is that ethical and fair to her? Please help as we are desperate for answers.
