I had sore throats all the time before my ulcer revealed itself to me. I honestly didn't know what it was. Once I did start having problems, I would lose my voice a lot. Also every time I catch a cold, it usually goes directly to my throat.

It happens to me where I really have a bad sore throat and I decided to consult a doctor and I was surprise when she told me it was GERD. never thought it can affect my throat. I made a research about acid reflux and GERD to know more about it. Here's a great video and article I found to give you additional information. - http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/04/25/News-Flash-Acid-Reflux-Caused-by-Too-Little-Acid-Not-Too-Much.aspx I hope it can help you as well to gain more knowledge about it.

Reading your posts I’m also experiencing the same problem like you guys. I have this regular sore throat and at first I thought it was just normal so just took it for granted. I used lozenges to temporarily cure it. But after reading your post I think I’d better see doctor right now. Maybe this is also a symptom for possible gerd.

I too have a constant sore throat. I had a gastroscope and it revealed that my oesaphagus us burnt from gastric reflux and there is a hole in one of the valves in my stomach. I've cut out all tea, coffee, chocolates, tomatoes and onions, flour and wheat products, fizzy drinks, in fact i've cut out everything which remotely looks fatty or acidy and i'm taking Nexium. I'm still uncomfortable after each meal (even if its a handful of raisins) and my throat and chest burn constantly. When I eat i blow up and it feels like i'm going to burst.I sleep with my head elevated and sleep 3 hours after my dinner. When i brush my teeth at night, my dinner is still stuck in my throat and it comes out. I keep coughing up phlegm which is not related to flu because i dont have a runny nose. Does anyone know what I can take, I'm desperate.

I too, have been suffering with a sore throat. My Dr. sent me to an ENT Specialist, who diagnosed me with GERD. He gave me a 5 day rx for steriods which FINALLY took my sore throat away! That was 2 months ago. It is now back again, and is so terribly painful. I have switched to a low acid coffee, and only have 2-3 cups of that a day (I used to live on coffee!), try not to eat too much chocolate, monitor all the other "trigger" foods and take a Zantac 75 when I feel the need, but I apparentely overdid it somehow. Now, nothing is helping. Is there anything anyone knows of taking to get rid of this sore throat, besides having to go to the doctor for more steriods??

I suffered for one year with a sure throat and conversation was limited due to horsiness and sureness of my voice box, an endoscopy discovered a mild relaxation of the sphincter allowing acid to rise. I was given Omeprazole at 40mg daily by my GP but after 4 months I had only a small improvement. I then asked to be put onto Pantoprazole (a German GP friend suggested I should try this brand of 'proton-pump inhibitor') firstly for two weeks at 80mg daily then at 40mg per day. 2 months in and I am feeling 80% better, only a slight sure throat and no problems with the voice box. I do not know why changing the brand helped but it did. I can live with the discomfort I suffer now. One other thing I do is eat two apples ( sliced ) a day, this also seems to help. Good luck to all sufferers. Tony

I was diagnosed with GERD 4+ years ago through an upper GI test for another problem. I had no idea I had GERD. For the most part have be unsymptomatic, and have been on Nexium this whole time. In Oct. 2005, I began to experience a constant burning sensation in my throat almost all the time. Nothing has helped. Not Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, etc...in addition they had me taking Pepcid Complete and Tums. I have also tried digestive enzymes. I occasionally get a few hours of relief, but even with diet changes it continues. Yesterday I had an endoscopy done by an excellent doctor. I was surprised to find out that my esophagus is in good shape, the valve is in good shape, and he "sees" nothing wrong. Am waiting for biopsy results...but am baffled, because this feeling in my throat is so intense and constant. It was decided to create a clean slate by stopping the nexium, and other items such as tums, Pepcid or digestive enzymes. Wait 3-4 wks to see if sensation goes away. I am pretty uncomfortable and most of the time don't even feel like eating...I too Ryan am too young and tired of feeling like this. I am glad to know that the endocscopy results are good, as I now can move forward without worring about cancer and other damage, but need to get to the bottom of this. Next I will probably seek out an otolaryngolotist who specializes in this area. Good luck. Anyone else out there going through this experience? The more we share, the more educated we can become. I had never knew anyone else was feeling the same sensation. Thanks for writing Ryan.

I have had the same problem of a sore throat for some time now. It started with worst sore throat I ever had. I was diagnosed with mild to moderate GERD through upper G.I. I am taking the same steps, Nexium, diet, elevated sleeping as you are and seem to be improving. I am not thrilled with prospect of indefinite drug use but haven't found an alternative yet. Good luck. R.

hello, At 24 years old, I feel way too young to be bothered by a constant sore throat. It started almost years ago and i have been to many a doctor for help. ive tried nexium, altering my diet, raising the head of my bed all with success. i also can't seem to find a single person that has experienced acid reflux with a sore throat like I have. Is there anyone who feels my pain? if so, what are you doing to combat this? very greatful to anyone who replies, ryan
